About the Klein Curaçao project
Klein Curaçao has been identified as a Ramsar site in 2018. This project aims to develop strategies for the protection of Klein Curaçao’s natural resources while allowing the sustainable use of this area for visitors and residents of Curaçao.
-
Awareness
The project will deliver multiple stakeholder sessions, clean-up and monitoring activities, online presence, and impactful stories.\
Special activities will be aligned with amongst others, World Heritage Day, International Day for Monuments and Sites, International Day of Biodiversity, World Environment Day, World Ocean Day, Curaçao Clean-up Day, World Tourism Day.
-
Development
The Klein Curaçao Development Plan includes important components aiming at sustainable management of Klein Curaçao. These components include Access Permits, a Research and Monitoring Program, a Restoration Plan for the Lighthouse, a Carrying Capacity Study, a Survey of Spatial Characteristics, and a long-term Sustainable Finance Mechanism.
-
Conservation
Through the RESEMBID’s initiative, the goal is to protect and preserve the marine biodiversity of Klein Curaçao, recognizing that marine ecosystems provide vital services to people. The key ecosystem services of Klein Curaçao include the resilience to hurricanes provided by healthy coral reefs, the importance of seagrass beds and mangroves, the beauty of the beaches and coastal waters for tourism, and the vital fish stocks that contribute to local food security and regional trade. Without adequate protection, conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of these marine ecosystems, these valuable services will no longer be able to withstand the increasing pressures of climate change, growing demands from rising world population and tourists visiting the islands.
-
Legal
Klein Curaçao is currently protected by several international conventions and protocols, such as CITES, which safeguards individual species, and the SPAW protocol which protects and promotes sustainable use of coastal and marine biodiversity in the wider Caribbean region. Furthermore, local legislation is needed to conserve our natural and cultural heritage. As part of this project, the necessary legal documents will be developed. This includes rules for access permits (related to ‘Verordering’), access permit templates for tour operators and other users, an initial document outlining the rules and responsibilities of all relevant stakeholders, and requirements for building and infrastructure.
